![]() ![]() If in doubt, a tow is cheaper, less hassle, and the pain subsides much quicker than the alternative. So I kept driving the car and thinking about it. I heard a small gurgle and hiss and noticed that the tank was full. I think I had waited about an hour before opening the tank. Since the gas was very low I decided to run 1/4 mile to gas station and while there checked the coolant tank. However, as I pulled out of the dealership driveway the coolant light came immediately on. So I decided to check my coolant expansion tank. The dealership used suction to remove the old coolant so no power flushing (and no lifting of the vehicle) was involved. If the coolant is not low, the next question is did it really overheat or were you getting false signals from a bad sensor? No point in speculating or worrying further until the simple and more likely is ruled out. I recently had my coolant light come on intermittantly on my 2006 BMW X3. Did you notice any steam or the smell of coolant before shutting it down? Beyond that, you are entering into the realm of more extensive repairs, such as a radiator or water pump, best diagnosed in a better sitting than a parking lot at a hotel. The hoses, especially around the clamps at the end, are the most common failure points. Look for any pooled coolant on exposed surfaces or evidence of flowing water in the dust and dirt under the hood. Take a few minutes under the hood and look around for evidence of an external leak and do check the oil, as JackB03 suggested, just in case. The check engine light should come on if the car is overheating. if it drops to about 1/3 - 1/4 full the lamp will come on. Nevertheless, the float stick was still floating and there was still some fluid left inside the reservoir. I checked the coolant reservoir and float stick was slightly below the 'low line'. the overflow bottle should be filled to the seam 1/2 way when cold. In the last few days the 'low coolant' light has been intermittently turning on on my friends BMW X3 (2007 70K miles). ![]() Adding water, for a short distance drive, is not a problem as long as you pay attention to the temperature. If you are getting the light right next to the security light (looks kind of like a radiator) it means the coolant level is low. That is the easiest fix in the long run but you do not want to drive if you do not have enough and/or the leak is bad. Is there anyway after changing it to burp it How do I know if it’s my water pump or something else besides the thermostat The solstice system is. Airlocks will cause the cooling system’s flow to be disturbed, which will cause an overheating engine. Now, have to find that danged thermostat. The first thing that could happen if you drive around with low coolant is that the water pump will pump air into the coolant system, which will cause airlocks in the coolant system. I filled it up, mostly cause when I took old one. Today, the check engine light came on, stopped at Advance Auto and had it read, says coolant temp is to low. I changed thermostat and the system was low couple times after changing. Hopefully, it is low from a simple leak, such as a hose. I’m having trouble with my 2007 gxp solstice. First thing is to check the coolant level. ![]()
